The latest vintage of Recioto di Soave, the 2008, highlights the designation of cru, the hill of Costeggiola. It is one of three different zones of the Soave Classico area (the others are Carcera and La Rocca) where Guerrieri Rizzardi has its own vineyards.
In the past, the selection of grapes for the production of Recioto was made in different vineyards in theses three areas. Yet, in recent years, we have identified some specific parcels of cru Costeggiola, where the Garganega grapes are particularly suitable for drying after harvest, thanks in particular to the vineyard's exposure, the age of the vines and the productivity per vine.
Hence, we have now made the decision to emphasize on the label this link with the soil, mentioning the name of the geographical cru. This cru Costeggiola is recognized and catalogued among the twelve historic cru of Soave classico area.
The grapes of Garganega are selected from pergola vineyards in the central and low part of Costeggiola. Planted between 1960 and 1998, the vines produce excellent quality grapes.
We select between 7% and 50% (rarely) of the grapes from the vines, usually around a third of the total product.
The grapes are dried in wooden boxes in the “ fruttaio” of Costeggiola, between three and five months, depending on the vintage.
We recommend this dessert wine served chilled (12-14° C or 54-57° F) with desserts such as lemon meringue, sponge cakes or short crust pastry. It can also be paired with other classic dessert wine pairings such as blue cheeses that include Stilton or Roquefort or delicacies such as foie gras.
Ageing potential: over 10 years.
